WORKSHOP: Fundamentals of Creating a Picture Book

I’m so excited to be offering a month-long intensive in picture book fundamentals through Maine Media Workshops & College this June. Here’s the course description and a link to more information and registration.

Attention primary educators, author-illustrators, and visual storytellers! Looking for a creative summer project? Take your picture book idea from concept to industry-standard dummy book ready for submission to agents/publishers or further development into a self-published book. This five-week, immersive, online-learning experience explores the art form of the picture book through group and individual meetings, as well as shared readings and resources.

Participants will be guided through the process of picture book manuscript writing and revision, thumbnail sketches/storyboarding and the creation of a thoughtfully considered and compelling ‘dummy book ’ which is the industry standard for submitting your book idea to agents and publishers (and best practice for an independently published book.) Through weekly prompts/assignments, participants will be encouraged to stay on track to complete a dummy book within the course timeframe, however the instructor will design the content of meetings and handouts so that participants have the knowledge and tools to complete their project at any time.  A familiarity of book layout using InDesign is recommended.
